The name Painting in New York reflects the shared relationship each artist has with painting in New York City, as well as a connection to the legacy of the New York School artists of the mid to late twentieth century, particularly the teachings of Hans Hofmann.
Hofmann brought to the United States a vision of painting rooted in European modernism that stood in contrast to the commercial and graphic traditions shaping much of American visual culture at the time. He emphasized painting as a spatial and sensorial experience, not merely the illusion of depth, but the creation of form, structure, and energy that could be felt as well as seen.
Originally from West Michigan, Mr. Loftis’ vision for the Painting in New York group was to create a context in which artists could see one another’s solutions and experiments with form, space, and color, and to further the conversation started by artists such as Arthur Dove, Arthur B. Carles, and Hans Hofmann, among others.
The artists in this group share a commitment to painting, and their work engages directly with American culture. References range from film and comic books to billboards, graphic arts, pop art, and folk traditions. This diversity of approaches reflects a contemporary and distinctly American sensibility.
